Respect, Consent and the Challenge of AI

Respect, Consent and the Challenge of AI

One of the reasons I was drawn to naturism is its emphasis on respect.

Respect for other people.
Respect for ourselves.
Respect for the environment.

If you visit almost any naturist website or read any naturist publication, you’ll find these values at the heart of what we do. The INF-FNI, the international organisation for naturism, lists respect as one of its fundamental principles.

Alongside respect sits another vital value: consent.

Every naturist knows that taking photographs of naked people without their permission is completely unacceptable. In an age where almost everyone carries a smartphone, obtaining clear consent before taking or sharing photographs has become more important than ever. Respect and consent are not optional extras within naturism; they are central to our culture.

That is why the rise of AI-generated nude images should concern all of us.

Today, powerful AI tools can create realistic nude images from perfectly innocent photographs of real people. Victims often discover that fake images of them are being shared online without their knowledge or consent. The emotional and reputational damage can be devastating.

As naturists, we understand better than most people why consent matters. We know that nudity itself is not the problem. The problem is the removal of personal choice, dignity and control.

Unfortunately, many large technology companies have been slow to address this growing issue. Harmful content can spread rapidly across social media platforms, while victims face an uphill battle to have it removed.

One of the companies facing criticism in this area is X, formerly Twitter, and its AI system, Grok. However, the issue extends far beyond any single platform. It is a challenge facing the entire technology industry.

There are campaigns pushing for stronger protections and greater accountability. One such campaign is being organised through Action Network, which is calling on technology companies to take greater responsibility for AI-generated abuse.

I believe this is an issue that naturists should care about. Respect and consent are not just naturist values; they are human values. If we genuinely believe in those principles, then we should be prepared to defend them both offline and online.

Please take a few moments to learn more about the campaign and consider lending your support.
